Native Americans and Alaska Natives are known to have much higher rates of substance abuse and alcohol and drug addiction than other ethnicities, an an issue which must be addressed for these cultures to endure. Although the things which trigger substance abuse may differ from person to individual, many of the reasons for the significantly higher rates of drug abuse among Native American and Alaska Natives related to their culture. First of all, Native American and Alaska Native adolescents appear to have some of the highest rates of drug and alcohol abuse in the nation. The most evident hurdles to treating Native Americans and Alaska Natives for addiction are cultural ones and their language.
